The Immediate Life Support course is a multidisciplinary 1-day course. It provides the essential knowledge and skills that are important in the initial phase of treating a critically ill patient who needs resuscitation.

The course includes the recognition and management of a deteriorating patient (including anaphylaxis) with the aim to prevent cardiorespiratory arrest. It also includes management of a cardiac arrest within a team, the use of an AED and basic airway manoeuvre.

The course is inline with guidelines from the Resuscitation Council (UK), NICE, the Royal College of Physicians as well as the clinical experience of ECG trainers.

The ILS course teaches the knowledge and skills to:

· identify the causes and promote the prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest;

· recognise and treat the deteriorating patient using the ABCDE approach;

· undertake the skills of quality CPR and defibrillation (manual and /or AED) and simple airway manoeuvres;

· utilise non-technical skills to facilitate initial leadership and effective team membership

NON-TECHNICAL SKILLS

The course also teaches non-technical skills that are of huge importance in an emergency. Three of the most important nontechnical skills are:

• Leadership: A leader is someone who gives instruction and takes control of the situation

• Teamwork: Teamwork is one of the most important skills. It helps teach communication and support. As well as how staff need to perform to the best of their ability and take accountability for their own actions.

• Awareness of the situation: Situational awareness is an understanding of what is happening and how your actions can impact the situation and outcome.

CHAIN OF PREVENTION

Your Subtitle Goes Here
3
The chain of prevention is a tool from the RCUK to help ensure staff can identify deterioration. This is to prevent a cardiac arrest.

Education: Educating staff in the assessment and identification of signs of deterioration.

Monitoring: Staff should perform patient monitoring and assessment using the A-E approach to assessment.

Recognition: Be able to put their training into practice to identify deterioration or any ‘red flags’.

Call for help: Healthcare staff must understand how to appropriately escalate any concerns.

Response: The appropriate clinicians/medical teams must respond to the situation within a reasonable time frame.

HOW LONG DOES THE COURSE LAST FOR?

The ILS course lasts for one day. The course programme consists of one lecture, skill stations and cardiac arrest simulations.

Assessment is continuous and led by the assessment forms provided for each core skill (e.g. initial resuscitation and assessment, and airway management).
